The city of Barranquilla recently held the Forum for the Integration of Migrant and Returned Populations and Support for Host Communities, an event in which important national and international figures participated.

One of the guests at the forum was the former mayor of the city of Georgetown, Guyana, Ubraj Narine, who is a renowned politician, legal assistant and Hindu priest from that country, as well as knowledgeable about the issue of migration.

Narine very kindly agreed to speak with playnoticias.co about various aspects related to the aforementioned forum, with the collaboration of Miguel Verzbolovskis as translator. “It has been an important event because it highlights a problem, not only in Latin America, but also in the Caribbean,” said the Guyanese politician, adding that the idea of attracting the support of international agencies such as the International Development Bank (IDB ) and Unicef, to meet the needs of our communities, especially at the municipal level,” he noted.

Ubraj Narine, maintained that the problem of migration “is a complicated situation that covers issues of childhood, integration of people, work problems and complicated situations for women, which requires not only the achievement and formation of public policies. , but rather its financing to be able to implement them.”

Narine also said that, “the essential thing is that national governments, as well as the international community, realize that the weight of these issues falls above all on the municipalities or territorial entities, which are the ones that endure the crisis on a day-to-day basis.” day and they must have quick solutions to the issue.”

On the other hand, the former mayor of Georgetown referred to the image he had of Barranquilla, the city he visited for the first time. “The sole initiative of the mayor (of Barranquilla), Jaime Pumarejo, of having developed this initiative in a forum that has brought together an important group of public policy makers and figures from the international community, has value in itself. Furthermore, I am struck by the measures that Barranquilla is taking to deal with the situation of migrants and I am grateful that they had invited me to a tour of some areas of the city. “It is important to share these experiences and ideas with our political party when I return to Georgetown,” he said.

When we asked him about the issue of the border dispute between Venezuela and Guyana, which has to do with the Essequibo region, the area where Ubraj Narine was born, the former mayor limited himself to saying only that, “it is a matter that the government of Guyana currently has to face and it is also prudent to wait for the ruling of the International Court of Justice.”
